Why Go Natural?

Store-bought toothpaste often contains chemicals that can do more harm

than good. Here are a few common culprits to watch out for:

Triclosan: An antibacterial agent that can interfere with hormones like

thyroid and reproductive hormones. It's been banned from hand soaps but

is still allowed in some toothpastes.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS): A foaming agent that can irritate your mouth and gums and even cause painful sores.

Artificial Sweeteners: Ingredients like aspartame or saccharin are added

for taste but can have potential health risks, from headaches to cancer

concerns.

Fluoride: While it helps prevent cavities, too much can cause dental

fluorosis and has been linked to bone health issues.

Parabens: These preservatives can mimic estrogen and have been linked to

hormone disruption.

Natural toothpaste is healthy and safe for your body. It's a natural teeth whitener without all the abrasive chemicals. Not only that, but it's also eco-friendly and budget friendly. If you're looking for a simple, natural way to keep your teeth clean and white without all the questionable ingredients, this homemade toothpaste has got you covered. As mentioned, store-bought toothpaste often contains chemicals like triclosan,

sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), and artificial sweeteners, which can irritate gums, disrupt hormones, and even harm the environment. Plus, those plastic tubes are just adding to the landfill problem. With just a few natural ingredients, you can make your own toothpaste that's safe, effective, and totally customizable!

What You'll Need:

- 1/4 cup baking soda (cleans and whitens) This one is a super affordable option if you're looking for a budget friendly choice.

- 2 tablespoons coconut oil (fights bacteria and helps with texture) Its best to use organic, virgin, unrefined coconut oil because it retains its natural antibacterial properties. If you're looking for an option, this one is a budget friendly choice.

- 10 drops peppermint essential oil (optional, for a fresh taste) Using a high-quality, pure essential oil is important, especially for something going in your mouth. I like DoTerra's Peppermint Oil because it's known for its purity and potency.

or

- Clove essential oil (optional, but great for cavity healing and pain relief- add 1-2 drops to your toothpaste mix. Check out this clove oil here.

- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt (optional, remineralizes and adds mild

abrasiveness) I usually get mine from Trader Joe's, but if you need a quick option that can be at your door tomorrow, this one is a great alternative.

- 1 teaspoon xylitol powder (optional, for a touch of sweetness and cavity

prevention) Xylitol is known to help prevent cavities by reducing bacteria in the mouth. If you want to add it, this option is a good choice.

- A small jar (to store your toothpaste) I usually try to upcycle my jars I already use, like marinara jars or pickle jars. But if you need extras, this multipack is great and can be used for other DIY projects too.

How to Make It

In a bowl, mix baking soda and coconut oil until well combined.

Add peppermint oil, clove oil, sea salt, and xylitol, if using. Mix until smooth.

Transfer to your jar and seal tightly.

How to Use

Scoop a small amount with a clean spoon or spatula (don't double dip because it can cause contamination and bacterial growth)

Apply to your toothbrush and brush as usual.

Rinse well and enjoy your fresh, clean smile!

Why It Works

Baking Soda: Naturally whitens and neutralizes acids that cause decay

Coconut Oil: Has antibacterial properties to help reduce plaque and freshen

breath.

Peppermint Oil: Provides a refreshing taste and helps fight bad breath

Sea Salt: Adds minerals and a gentle abrasive quality

Xylitol: Reduces cavity-causing bacteria while adding a touch of

sweetness

Clove Oil: Known for its antibacterial and pain-relieving properties

Fresh Tip:

Since coconut oil solidifies in cooler temperatures, you may want to warm it

slightly before mixing. And don't spit it down the drain-it can clog pipes! Spit

into a tissue and dispose of it in the trash instead.

With this homemade toothpaste, you'll get a brighter, cleaner smile without

the extra junk found in commercial brands. Your teeth, wallet, and the planet

will thank you!
