The Easiest DIY Fabric Softener

Fabric Softener: Soft, Fresh, and Chemical-Free

This site contains affiliate links.

Store-bought fabric softeners might make your clothes feel soft, but they're

loaded with chemicals like quats (quaternary ammonium compounds) and

artificial fragrances that can cause skin irritation and leave behind residues.

Plus, these chemicals can build up in your washing machine and eventually

end up polluting waterways!

Switching to a natural fabric softener is not only better for your skin and the

environment, but it's also way more affordable! You can make it with just TWO

SIMPLE INGREDIENTS you probably already have!

What You'll Need

A bottle (16 oz or larger, preferably with a lid) I found these cute ones on amazon in a multipack that would be great for my other DIYs cleaning products.

• Distilled white vinegar (fills the bottle) This one is my go-to option.

• 30 drops of essential oil (optional)

Enhance Your Laundry with Essential Oils

If you love a fresh scent but want to skip the synthetic fragrances, essential oils are a great natural alternative! Just add a few drops to your wool dryer balls (like these ones) or mix them with vinegar for a chemical-free fabric softener. Each scent has its own unique benefits:

Lavender – Calming and soothing, perfect for winding down at night.

Lemon – Bright and uplifting, great for a fresh, clean scent.

Tea Tree – Naturally antibacterial, helps eliminate odors.

Eucalyptus – Refreshing and great for supporting clear breathing.

Peppermint – Energizing and cooling, perfect for a crisp scent.

Orange – Cheerful and citrusy, adds a sweet, fresh smell.

Want to try these out? Here are some of my favorite high-quality essential oils:

DoTerra's Beginner Trio Pack: Includes peppermint, lemon, and lavender

How to Make It

Pour distilled vinegar into your bottle, leaving a little space at the top.

Add 30 drops of your favorite essential oil.

Close the lid and give it a good shake to mix.

How to Use

Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of your homemade fabric softener to the rinse cycle of

your washing machine,

You can also use a fabric softener ball if your machine doesn't have a

separate dispenser. This one is a popular choice.

Why It Works

Vinegar: Naturally softens fabrics and breaks down detergent residues.

Essential Oils: Leave a light, pleasant scent without irritating synthetic

fragrances.

Why Choose Natural?

Gentle on Sensitive Skin: No harsh chemicals that can cause irritation

Eco-Friendly: Vinegar breaks down easily and doesn't harm the

environment.

Cost-Effective: A bottle of vinegar and some essential oils cost way less

than brand-name softeners.

No Residue: Leaves your clothes feeling soft without that weird, waxy

buildup

Want other natural alternatives to fabric softeners that you don't have to make yourself? This one is a great option, and its ocean scented!

What lurks in commercial fabric softeners?

Most people use fabric softeners to keep their laundry feeling soft and smelling fresh—but did you know they can contain harmful chemicals? Many store-bought fabric softeners are made with ingredients that can irritate the skin, trigger allergies, and even pollute the air inside your home. Here are some of the biggest culprits:

Skin & Breathing Irritants – Some softeners contain chemicals called "quats" (short for quaternary ammonium compounds), which make fabrics feel softer but can cause skin irritation, asthma symptoms, and even harm the environment.

Hidden Fragrances – That “fresh scent” might be made from synthetic fragrances containing hormone-disrupting chemicals like phthalates. These can also trigger headaches or allergic reactions in sensitive people.

Preservatives & Dyes – Many fabric softeners contain artificial dyes and preservatives that can cause rashes or irritation, especially for those with sensitive skin.

Air Pollutants – Some chemicals in fabric softeners can release toxins into the air, including substances linked to respiratory issues and long-term health risks.
