If you’ve ever battled cockroaches but hesitated to spray harsh chemicals around your home, especially with a curious cat in the mix, you’re not alone. Many essential oils and pest control products can be toxic to cats, but that doesn’t mean you’re stuck with bugs.


This post is for the pet parents who want a natural, cat-safe way to repel roaches and protect their home without risking their fur baby's health. Why Go Natural?


Traditional insecticides and even some natural options (like undiluted lavender or tea tree oil) can be toxic to cats, leading to skin irritation, breathing issues, or worse. The good news? There are several effective, pet-safe options that get the job done, without putting your furry friends at risk.

1. Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth


This fine, powdery substance is harmless to humans and pets—but lethal to insects. It dehydrates cockroaches by piercing their exoskeletons.


How to use:


Sprinkle food-grade diatomaceous earth along baseboards, behind appliances, and in crevices where roaches hide.


Leave for a few hours (or overnight), then vacuum the area.


Reapply as needed.

2. Bay Leaves


Roaches hate the smell of bay leaves, but cats can safely be around them.


How to use:


Place whole bay leaves in cupboards, under the sink, or in any area you’ve seen roaches.


Replace every 2–4 weeks to keep the scent fresh.

3. Catnip (Yes, Really!)


It’s a treat for cats, but a repellent to roaches. Studies show that nepetalactone, the active compound in catnip, is highly effective at driving them away.


How to use:


Place small sachets or sprinkle dried catnip in problem areas.


Be mindful that your cat may investigate, so don’t overdo it.

4. DIY Essential Oil Spray (Heavily Diluted & Cautious Use)


Some essential oils, like cedarwood, lemongrass, and eucalyptus, can repel roaches. However, many oils are toxic to cats, so always dilute heavily and use away from pet lounging areas.


How to use:


Mix 10 drops of essential oil with 2 cups of water in a spray bottle.


Spray only in non-pet zones or when your cat isn’t in the room.


Let the area dry before your cat has access again.

5. Baking Soda & Sugar Trap


A classic non-toxic combo: sugar lures the roaches, baking soda kills them.


How to use:


Mix equal parts baking soda and sugar.


Place the mixture in shallow dishes or jar lids.


Set them behind appliances or near trash bins, away from your cat.

6. Neem Oil Spray (Diluted)


Neem oil is a natural pesticide that messes with insect hormones and reproduction cycles but must be used sparingly around pets.


How to use:


Mix 1 tsp neem oil with 2 cups of warm water and a few drops of dish soap in a spray bottle.


Spray in roach-prone areas (avoid food or pet areas).


Allow to air dry before letting your cat near it.

Bonus Tips for Keeping Roaches Away Naturally:



Keep floors and counters crumb-free.


Store food in sealed containers.


Take out the trash daily.


Patch cracks and crevices that serve as entry points.


Clean under appliances and in dark corners weekly.
